Château Bellefontaine an exceptional "terroir"... The vineyard which has now become Bellefontaine was then a long walk from the village and for the workers that was impossible, so they were put up in a cottage which was built on the estate to house men and horses so that they could eat and sleep. The choice of location of the Château and its outbuildings didn't happen by accident. The Château was built close to an artesian spring from which the name Bellefontaine is derived. It is believed that the spring water comes directly from the Alps and is absolutley pure and fresh, after all it has refreshed six generations of vineyard owners on this domain. Unfortunately one of the mains arteries of the spring was damaged during the construction to enlarge the Château so one can no longer hear the burble of water as before, but it continues to flow 8 metres below the surface. This story has inspired Thierry de Combarieu when choosing his labels and he proudly displays a fountain as a sign of recognition of the past history of the Château and maintains the life that the water has given to the property. *gress : local appellation for rocky terrain made of silice pebbles washed by the river Rhône under the Quaternary era |
